Obama: India ‘Messing’ With Kashmir

In Kashmir, News on 7 November, 2008 at 12:45 am

Obama seems determined to solve the Kashmir issue, his remark on India’s behavior with Kashmir was:

he also wondered why India wants to ‘keep on messing’ with the Kashmir issue which is a ‘potential tar pit diplomatically.’ Free Republic

He also considers solving the Kashmir issue ‘critical task’ for his administration.

Working with Pakistan and India to try to resolve the Kashmir “crisis in a serious way are critical tasks” for the next administration, he said.

And plans to devote serious diplomatic resources for Kashmir

Saying that Kashmir is now in an “interesting situation”, Obama is ready to explore the option for the U.S. “to devote serious diplomatic resources to get a special envoy in there, to figure out a plausible approach”. Yahoo

His plans on appointing Bill Clinton (who as the President of United States called Kashmir, the most beautiful prison in the world) as an envoy to Kashmir has made India all jittery, it will be seen how India responds to America’s renewed interest in Kashmir. It is pertinent to mention here that it was the Democrat Presidential Candidate Adlai Stevenson, who was supposed to have been talking with Sheikh Abdullah for a possible independent Kashmir. Sheikh Abdullah’s meeting with Adlai Stevenson was one of the reasons why Abdullah was arrested.

What is most interesting about his remarks is that he has not called the movement in Kashmir Islamic Terrorism, all efforts by India to portray Kashmir as an Islamic Jihad have failed to impress the most powerful man on earth; the presence of American-Indians in his team, which the Indian Media is celebrating as an achievement, has made no effect on his thoughts and planned efforts on Kashmir either.

It will be interesting to see how Pakistan will re-jump the Kashmir wagon now, having almost gotten rid of it!

  3. This is wishful thinking that US is going to be able to push for any freedom of Kashmir… Wait till he starts squeezing ISI for all its terror modules and support for Jihadi’s…

  4. Hi K,
It’d been quite some time since I visited this blog. Must say that I like the new look and the kinds of posts that are coming. Keep it up

    regards

  5. It is only one side of story and new thing is that why he wants bill to help in Kashmir problem is because he knows everything how Americans shield Pakistan after independence because of their interest in region. It was bill who has changed the perception of Americans that Pakistan is not fulfilling what they want. Eye was on India as superpower in economy so for there own interest who is better I(ndia) or P(akistan). You and i are in this world let us watch and wait. You will find tremendous pressure on Pakistan. There will be plebiscite in whole of J&k (India Pakistan). Then you will find yourself which way the wind will flown.

Thank you for your encouraging comments. Keep visiting!

  7. Americans just gave Indians the most controversial deal in the world – Keep the bombs and still get the fuel and technology. You guys are not serious when you think that Obama will cry for your freedom; specially when he has to counter threat from China and Pakistani jehadis. It’s been too long mate; grow up. Even if Indians loose 5000 – 6000 troops a year in valley there’s no reason why they’d give it up and ask Chinese or Pakis to come and sit on top of them. For US, there’s too much at stake to loose India for a few thousand in a remote location.

  8. K, It is interesting how you twist words and quote selectively to suit your wishful thinking. First of all, you quote Greater Kashmir, the most “independent” source to make your “headline”. Then you even twist that to make Clinton an “envoy to Kashmir” instead of an “envoy on Kashmir”. I am sure this will be news to both Obama and to Clinton.

Consider what the Greater Kashmir report actually says, not what your blog post interprets it to say:

The President-elect said, “We should probably try to facilitate a better understanding between India and Pakistan and try to resolve the Kashmir crisis so that Pakistan can stay focused not on India, but on the situation with those militants (on Pak-Afghan border).”

    And also…

His deputy, Jeo (sic) Biden is considered close to India and he is likely to play an important role in the foreign policy of the Obama administration.

Just because “he has not called the movement in Kashmir Islamic Terrorism” in this report, does not mean he thinks otherwise. It is Islamic terrorism and nothing else. It is really interesting to see how you appear to be clinging to twigs to say it is not so.

  9. The President-elect said, “We should probably try to facilitate a better understanding between India and Pakistan and try to resolve the Kashmir crisis so that Pakistan can stay focused not on India, but on the situation with those militants (on Pak-Afghan border).”

The second part of the statement should tell you where Obama’s prioritites lie, and that is not Kashmir. What makes you think that after today’s attacks on Mumbai, anyone in his right mind will support Islamic fundamentalism going on anywhere in the world? Kashmir’s separation will do nothing more than add it to the territory of Taliban.

  10. Arun

The quotes are Obama’s not mine and I am no policy maker, perhaps you should ask him whether he is serious in what he says? Americans would say he is!

    Koshur

Thank you for your comments, they have been eye-opening!

I linked to Greater Kashmir, did not quote it! Why did you fail to see the quotes from Free Repulic and Yahoo News?

If Obama thinks that the movement in Kashmir is Islamic Terrorism, who is he scared of to not call it so? I sympathise with your frustrations.

Obama does think that solving Kashmir issue is critical for his government, read the post from the begining please. Also, it makes sense that in order to deal with Afghan-Pakistan issue he will have to help solve Kashmir. Wasn’t the creation of Bangladesh just an extension of Kashmir’s politics?

  11. K

Wasn’t the creation of Bangladesh just an extension of Kashmir’s politics?

Surprising that a Kashmiri is hurt by creation of Bangladesh and treat it as an extension of Kashmir’s politics.

Accession of Kashmir by its ruler (as it was a princely state) to India in 1947 was a big blow to the “Two Nation Theory” of Jinnah, something which Pakistan could never accept, even after 61 years.

The “Two Nation Theory” was again defeated in 1971 when Bangladesh was formed, dividing Pakistan.

A free Kashmir would be a weak nation between three superpowers (India, Pakistan and China), so it’s in Kashmir’s own benefit to stay with one country and contribute for development. Every Kashmiri should understand that for resources as well as security, we are and always will heavily dependent on one of the three superpowers.

I too am a Kashmiri, grown up and settled in India.

  12. I linked to Greater Kashmir, did not quote it!

You did (mis)quote it though, by writing “He plans on appointing Bill Clinton as an envoy to Kashmir” when the GK report had said “..on Kashmir”.

If Obama thinks that the movement in Kashmir is Islamic Terrorism, who is he scared of to not call it so?

If a person does not say something at a given moment, that does not mean that he believes the opposite of it.

    I sympathise with your frustrations.

    Thanks, I symphathise with yours.

Also, it makes sense that in order to deal with Afghan-Pakistan issue he will have to help solve Kashmir.

Solve Kashmir? It depends on what you call a solution of Kashmir. A solution to help whom? Pakistan? US? Kashmiri people? Which Kashmiri people? In your eyes, the only solution is so-called “independence” of Kashmir. Do you think Obama will want more territory for LeT training camps, or for Al Qaeda and Taleban? Think about it. No change in Kashmir’s status will make things peaceful in the region. If anything will make things better is eschewal of violence by Kashmiris and their instigators.
